Pedroia has hamate bone surgery

In 2004, it was Curt Schilling’s surgically repaired ankle. Three years later, Dustin Pedroia's broken hand offered perhaps the most remarkable tale of the Red Sox’ run to a World Series championship.

Pedroia admitted yesterday that he played the final two months of the season with a cracked hamate bone in his left hand.

The second baseman doesn’t know when he suffered the injury, but it was discovered during an MRI and bone scan on Sept. 10. He didn’t undergo surgery until Tuesday. He is wearing a soft cast and is restricted from using the hand until late November or early December.

I love Dusty. Hopefully he wasn't in too much pain, but if he was, he definitely stuck it out and showed us a lot of grit and determination in what he did this postseason, as he was one of our best players.

To do as good as he did with a broken hand,( I'm no Doctor so i'm not real sure about the injury and it's severity) is pretty gutsy. Imagine what he can do with like 2 good hands.

Players typically recover fully in 2-3 months. He'll be fine by ST with likely no ill effects.

I don't remember when it was (last couple months, but don't remember exactly when), but I remember a game where he made a play going to his right and rolled on his left (glove) hand. He stayed down for a sec and you could tell he was in pain....i wonder if this is when it happened or if it just hurt more since it was injured? Either way, it's still amazing!

The injury cost Dustin OBP, but not too much BA or SLG. That makes sense: his right hand drove the bat; his injured left hand controlled his swing.

Pedroia hit .283/.348/.483 in the postseason, injured, against better-than-average pitching. My sabermetric estimation is that he had balls.

Wouldn't be surprised if that was when it occured.

Still, you would have never known he was hurt with the way he was performing.

Solid campaign all the way through. The above assumes that ONLY the injury played into the slight dip in his numbers...could there not have been other factors at play?

Possibly, although 50 points is a lot and a fracture is a significant factor.
