Boston Red Sox (77-51) @ Chicago White Sox (56-71)

Beckett got it done, it wasn't pretty, but he won his 16th.

We avoided using Papelbon. We put the game away when we had to.

Tonight, Schilling makes the FO think 13 mil isn't all that unreasonable.

WIN.

PS The MN for the division is now a tidy 30. Make it 28 tonight (with a little help from the Tigers)

Red Sox gear up for twin bill
Boston (76-51) at Chicago (56-70), 2:05 p.m., 8:11 p.m. ET

He enters Friday straddling an uneasy line. Is Curt Schilling back, or is he not? Three starts into Schilling's return from right shoulder tendinitis, it's difficult to say.

What happens in Schilling's fourth start, against the White Sox in the second game of a twin bill at U.S. Cellular Field in Chicago, could clarify matters. The Red Sox hurler has just one month left in Boston, if he doesn't ink an extension or a new contract after the season. Last week, the situation had Schilling musing on the radio that he could finish his career in Tampa Bay. No expert would dare predict the final chapter of Schilling's potential Hall of Fame career.

In his first start in Chicago since July 2006, Schilling faces John Danks. Coming off his first win since his near no-hitter on June 7 -- it was David Ortiz's monstrous grand slam that made the difference against Los Angeles, however, as he allowed five runs -- Schilling has thrown 18 innings since his return from injury.

Twelve of those were against the Angels, coming in a pair of sub-par outings. Schilling compiled the rest during six shutout innings in Baltimore, when he nevertheless failed to strike out a batter.

Fans, promised a return to Schilling's old form by his three dominant rehab starts at Pawtucket, are still waiting.

Pitching matchup

Game 2:
BOS: RHP Curt Schilling (7-5, 4.25 ERA)

Schilling gave up two runs in six innings in his last start in Chicago, what became a 19-inning game on the Sunday before the 2006 All-Star break. That White Sox team featured essentially the same regulars that it does now; a lineup powered by old hands Jim Thome, Paul Konerko, and Jermaine Dye. But that was a different team. Now 56-70, and fighting to stay out of the AL Central basement, the White Sox were 57-31 when Schilling last faced them.

CWS: LHP John Danks (6-11, 5.30 ERA)
The rookie's allowed 10 homers through 10 home starts this season.

Player to watch
Manny Ramirez, who reached base all three times against Garland in July, stroking a three-run homer in the process.
