The Red Sox haven't lost in two full trips through their starting rotation. On Saturday afternoon, they begin the effort to make it a third, hosting Texas in the second of three games at Fenway Park.

On Friday night, Boston shut out the Rangers, 2-0, behind seven strong innings from Pedro Martinez and solo home runs from Manny Ramirez and Bill Mueller.

The man who started the streak -- Tim Wakefield --gets another shot at adding to it on Saturday. In the process, he can improve his personal winning streak to four games and seven of his last eight. Wakefield has allowed just six runs over 21 innings in his last three starts and has already faced Texas twice this year. On May 2, he took the loss despite allowing just two runs over seven innings, while he came out with a no-decision in a 6-5 Rangers win after a six-inning, five-run outing on July 11.

Wakefield faces Chris Young, a 6-foot-10 former Princeton basketball player who will be making his third career start, and first away from Ameriquest Field in Arlington.

Pitching matchup
BOS: RHP Tim Wakefield
# 11-7, 4.38 ERA in 2004
# 0-1, 4.85 ERA vs. TEX in 2004
# 6-10, 5.66 ERA lifetime vs. TEX

TEX: RHP Chris Young
# 0-1, 5.40 ERA in 2004
# Making first career appearance vs. BOS

Players to watch
Mueller is hitting .392 with nine doubles, a triple, three home runs, 15 RBIs and 25 runs scored in his last 28 games. ... Ramirez is batting .312 in his last 20 games and has 18 homers and 60 RBIs in his last 55 contests. ... Gary Matthews Jr. has reached base in eight of his 14 plate appearances over his last four games.

Quotable
"You know what? I look at the scoreboard. I look at the standings, because it's important. But I'm really more concerned about us. Because if we do what we're doing, then we're going to wake up, whenever the time comes, and we're going to be OK." -- Red Sox manager Terry Francona

Lets go for three sweeps in a row and really put the wildcard out of reach. Game time is at 1:20.

I don't even understand how Texas can be considered a wild card contender. They're pitching someone with TWO CAREER STARTS and the heart of the wild card race. Brutal. Their rotation is almost as bad as the Yankees'.

sarasoxfan

almost as bad, but the yankees staretrs are worse.

Ponson is a fat slob, but porky will beat the moose.

1.5 here we come..

go wake!

Mussina gave up a HR in the 3rd...it was a solo shot to Gibbons, but would have been a 2-R HR if Segui hadn't been caught stealing for the first out.

Young has been pretty impressive. 3-1 Rangers through 2, hopefully we can come back and win. It's still early.

Ponson has been dominant, but Mussina hasn't been bad either.

I don't trust Wake much anymore. I'm sorry, but I just don't. Knuckleballers are too unpredictable.

At least the yankees are losing too, right?

YanksHater213

Did anyone see that retard with the sign on top of the monster that read:

"attention yankees, objects in mirror appear closer then they are" word for word. Not only did he spell "than" wrong, but he got the whole POINT wrong. We're closer than we appear, not farther away than we appear dumass.

But yes, 8-6 is good. We're coming back! Like sarasox said, even if we lose, we just proved we're playing beyond well. Think about it, 1.5 games back of the yankees, who jus tlost 7-0 to the Orioles.

redux.

That was not a fucking tag. What a crock of shit. There should be man on second, two outs, manny up right now.

excuse my language, but that was bull-fucking-shit. roberts was nowhere close to being tagged.

We still looked damn good in that loss. We refused to be buried, and came back hard. If Wakefield didn't put us in a hole we win. Schilling will keep us in it tommorow, and Sox bounce back and win. The Yankees looked awful, they just rolled over and got destroyed

guys, look we cant be that mad. im not mad right now like i usually am. i mean for once, when we lose, the yankees lose.

did we really expect to win every game coming up? no. even if it looked like we should have won this game in the beginning, we didnt, which is what happens in every sport every day. doesnt matter what happened, the roberts tag is over, and at least it wasnt in some crucial game. this game didnt really mean anything. nothing horrible came out of this loss. we looked OUTSTANDING in this loss. it was a loss, but a loss that we cant blame ourselves for, and thats the point.

this game is a win for us. even though we lost, we played like winners who are about to win a game, and nothing bad in standings or anything happened. we are in fine shape, and can look to tomorrow for another win with schilling on the mound. texas...bring it on.

bottom line being, win or lose tonight and any other night, the sox right now are THE HOTTEST TEAM IN THE MLB, and on any given night, the team to beat.

go sox, here we come!! playoffs '05 baby.

so far, september has been a great month for us, even though its been four days. this team has showed signs of not slowing down.

that may have been one of my better posts of my time here B) , and pretty deep if i do add.

im not upset at all...I know we will come out and win with schill on the mound, i have so much confidence in him, we made a great run at the end of today's ballgame and almost came back and won, and you said it best, the yankees lost too...meaning we are still 2.5 games back.

CalvnHobs6
09-05-2004, 01:08 AM
The fact is...the sox tried to surmount a nearly insurmountable comeback. And they almost pulled it off. What we know as fans now is this:
If the right call was made...Manny may have tied the game.
The Sox are the best damn team in baseball.

No hard feelings about today. All we learned is that the Sox are running on all cylinders...and that Wake is inconsistent.

mosox
09-05-2004, 01:32 AM
I agree with most of what's said here. The comeback fell short but it's ok, we lose no ground on the AL East. On the bright side Ortiz comes back and cracks a homer and Mendoza looked good, we need him down the stretch. Mirabelli has been very good all year catching Wake, but clearly we missed Tek's bat, along with Damon. Stupid call in the 9th prevented Manny from coming up with a man on.

sarasoxfan
09-05-2004, 07:50 AM
count me in...there can be good losses and what we did was awesome.

Zenny

I don't have as much faith in Wake that I did last season. I'd much rather see Bronson take the hill in Game 3 of any series.

YanksHater213
09-05-2004, 10:17 AM
nah, id rather see lowe ;) bronson can go in game 4

schillingouttheks

id like to see wake in a clutch game against the yankees however. i think wake has had a prime year that we didnt notice, or next year will be it. wakes incosistency is starting to worry me.
