Pedro vs. C.C. in a tale of two aces
Cleveland (13-18) at Boston (19-13), 7:05 p.m. ET
By Alan Ginsberg / MLB.com

For the second time in two weeks, the Red Sox play the second game of a set against Cleveland looking to even the series.

Monday night, Boston twice recovered from two-run deficits to tie the score before the Indians pulled away for a 10-6 victory, snapping a five-game losing streak that began when the Red Sox took the final two games of the teams' four-game series in Cleveland last week.

Pedro Martinez and C.C. Sabathia are slated to square off in a rematch of the final game of that series, which Boston won 5-2 behind a strong seven innings from its ace.

That win continued a career of dominance for Martinez over the Indians. Martinez is 11-1 with a 1.72 lifetime ERA against Cleveland.

Pitching matchup
BOS: RHP Pedro Martinez
4-2, 3.92 ERA in 2004

CLE: LHP C.C. Sabathia
1-1, 2.34 ERA in 2004
0-1, 5.40 vs. BOS in 2004
1-2, 3.43 lifetime vs. BOS

Players to watch
With three hits Monday night, Johnny Damon extended his streak of consecutive multi-hit games to four ... Jason Varitek is hitting .395 (17-for-43) with three doubles, four home runs and 12 RBI over his last 13 games after enduring an 0-for-17 stretch ... With a ninth-inning double Monday night, Jody Gerut extended his hitting streak to 13 games, tying a career high.

Quotable
"Most of the games where we score six or seven runs we're going to win. Tonight we didn't. But we'll be back tomorrow and we'll try to get the series." -- Kevin Millar

Yea, thats 5 games in a row right, against Cleveland? Pretty pathetic if you ask me.

Petey typically pitches well early on in games, at least this season. I remember, was it last year or two years ago, when he had an 8.something ERA in the first two innings and then a 1.something for innings after that.

YanksHater213

so much for petey pitching well in the beginning of games...

the streak goes on, 6 games in a row vs the tribe allowing 2 in the 1st

Wow, is this a frickin joke. I don't understand why we can't pitch well in the first. Maybe have our pitchers throw 100 pitches in warmups.

And I'll counter with some more pessimism: He allowed two runs in doing it. :(

I dont understand it though. He can strike out the side and be utterly dominant, and then give up 2 runs. It's annoyingly inconsistent!

on a better note, the angels are winning 3-0 over the evil empire (i will post score updates as their game progresses)

as pedro Ks number 5, this is becoming a toss up, hit or strikeout

6 Ks for petey, he is too inconsistent, hit, walk, K, hit, K, hit, K

Ugh. Our offense is getting shut down, and Pedro, although getting the K's, isn't getting it done! He's up to 60 pitches already.

I'm loving what I'm seeing from Pedro tonight. I have no idea why we are struggling so much in the first inning. This makes no sense, I guess we just need to concentrate more at the beginning.

The New Pedro.

1st inning - Sucks
2nd inning - Shaky
3rd - 6th - Good (or gets bombed in the 4th, but mostly good)
7th - outa gas. Hopefully makes it through.

That's what Pedro's been doing all year and into last. Hopefully he can go a full 6 tonight and leave with a lead.

Don't worry. You don't look half as stupid as you think you do when you post 3 times in a row. Especially since its a game thread, post a million times in a row, its ok!

Nice to see that its finally tied, but we could be WINNING if we didnt have first inning woes.

Bad baserunning = hard times for the sox. If manny hadn't tried to steal, Ortiz's homerun would've put the sox ahead.

and that inning would have kept going with runners at 1st and 2nd with 2 out. BUT, I do want them to run and keep pressure on the pitcher more...

Yeah, okay, 10 K's. But he still gave up two runs in the first, and at a time where the sox offense hasn't had its usual production, he needs to be dominant early in the game. Will he go out another inning? Should he?

Does anyone else find it strange how Millar's been on an absolute tear recently, raising his average up near 300, and he goes 0-4. This is the inconsistency that I keep worrying about. Our hottest hitters go hitless, and our best pitchers struggle through early innings and then dominate. Whats going on!?

True that.

I'm a little upset about Embree getting the win. Can't they make an exception?? Like give it to Pedro? Cause he kicked some serious ass. Look at his numbers.
7 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, ELEVEN STRIKEOUTS, 2 BB.

I'll take it. I think it was his second best start of the year. Second best only to his first start against Halladay.

Indeed. That first start agains the H-Dog was incredible. I find it funny that I did not post at all in a thread that I started. I was busy with work and watching the game though.

And I do agree, Pedro deserved that win like none other. He was downright superios, except for that first inning. Embree gave up a homerun and got the win. Go figure. Oh well, wins dont matter in the long run for a pitcher, quality of starts does, and without pedro we would not have won that.
