Just for kicks, what do you think the team will look like in 5 years time? What will the lineup look like? The bullpen? The starting rotation? What minor leaguers will be busts? I'll post mine later. I just thought that this could be fun.

Well right now it's kinda looking like:

C Shoppach
1B West
2B Youkillis/Spann
3B Youkillis/Spann
SS Hanley Ramirez
LF Manny Ramirez
CF Matt Murton
RF Trot Nixon
SP Abe Alvarez
SP Jon Lester
SP BH Kim
SP Bronson Arroyo
SP Charlie Zink?
CP Anastacio Martinez

Now of course there will be free agent signing and trades and all that but pretty much just used the players we have in our organization now.

David Murphy could be added to that, and maybe the draft pick this year

I dont see Trot being on the team in 5 years. I would like to think that Nomar would be here though.

 And I HIGHLY doubt that the entire team would be made up of current Red Sox farm hands. I bet we'll have some current huge name star who is only bound to get better, a la Carlos Beltran or Albert Pujols. (can you imagine Pujols on the sox!)

If nothing changes in the prospect and free agent department (HUGELY unlikely), the team will look like this:

C- Shoppach
1B- West
2B- Luis Soto
SS- Hanley
3B- Youkilis
LF- Murton
CF- Murphy
RF- Trot
DH- Manny

Alvarez
Lester
Delcarmen
Gamble
Cedeno

Anastacio Martinez

So pretty, much, that's the All-Prospect Team with Trot in RF and Manny at DH. That has about a 0.01% chance of happening. I think the only ones who will have any sticking power in Boston are Shoppach, the Bash Brothers (the inseperable Murphy and Murton, who I think have the best chance), Alvarez and Manny Delcarmen (a Boston native, might I add). That list could quickly change if Manny D. doesn't recover from TJ surgery, Varitek is re-signed and Shoppach is shipped out or any of those boys don't live up to potential.

With the free agent market the way it is, and contract disputes and greedy agents.. there's absolutely no way the team can be predicted 5 years from now.

but the yankees team can.
C- Posada
1b- Giambi
2b- Vidro
3b- Gay-rod
SS- Jeter
OF- Matsui
OF- Beltran
OF- Sheffield

SP- Mussina
SP- Vazquez
SP- Hudson
SP- Colon
SP- Milwood
RP- Riviera

Not sure about the contracts of millwood and colon but theyll somehow find theyre way on the yankees

That Yankee team would be so old, I don't think they could compete. Murphy needs to start hitting some homeruns 0 so far.

I'd like to hear what Theo has to say about this. I heard on WEEI last week that Theo has such a keen mind that he pretty much knows how the team will look in 2008.

Come on Theo.......join the damn site.

It's tough enough to predict who's going to be on the team in 5 months let alone 5 years. Here's my stab at it. Laugh away...

C - Kelly Shoppach
1B - Erubiel Durazo
2B - Junior Spivey
SS - Ceasar Crespo
3B - Kevin Youkilis
LF - Magglio Ordonez
CF - Carlos Beltran
RF - Rocco Baldelli
DH - Manny Ramirez

1- Barry Zito
2- Tim Wakefield
3- Sidney Ponson
4- Charlie Zink
5- Johan Santana

CL- Bronson Arroyo

Sox send Hanley Ramirez to Seattle and Pedro to Oakland
Seattle sends Jolbert Cabrerra to Oakland
Oakland sends Zito and Durazo to Sox

Wow, I'm a dreamer.

SS - Ceasar Crespo

God help us all if that's the case.

Haha, GIZT (thats my new abbreviation for you), that team would be absolutely devastating, even with captain crespo at SS.

I don't know. I think the Sox front office is looking at it from a classic old school perspective. They're re-distributing their offense and defense according to how it will best match up with their opponents.

I think they're going to pay big bucks on pitching and to have most of their offense in the outfield where they can sacrifice a little defensive skill. I think that means they'll invest a little more at either first and/or third, unless they can develop something comparable to what's available on the market (i.e. if Youkilis meets expectations). That leaves the middle infield and bullpen. The bullpen will always be retreads because who aspires to be a long-reliever or lefty-specialist? Typically, good defensive infielders (especially the home grown sort that they seem to have a bunch of on the farm) are a cheap alternative to trying to get an offensive stud SS or 2B.

I also think that after the Walker experiment last year they value double plays more than a handful of homers from their infield. I know they're pumping up Hanley so they can dump him on someone else. That guy's a good ball player, but he's a clubhouse cancer. With a little more experience Crespo may fit in well with the way they're putting ball clubs together....at least for a little while anyway. I think he's doing very well, despite popular belief, for a guy who was probably expecting to get at least one more developmental season in AAA. To be unexpectedly thrust into the the show like that isn't always easy.

I don't know about 5 years from now, but here's the lineup for the year 2025:

1B: Joe Blow
2B: Somebody
SS: Other Guy
3B: Somebody Else
C: Random Shmoe
LF: Etc.
CF: Etc.
RF: Etc.

And the Opening Day starting pitcher?

SP: Tim Wakefield

Yes, at the ripe old age of 50-something Wakefield will still be throwing rotation-free 65 mph floaters to a whole new generation of hitters. Seriously, how much wear and tear does he put on his arm? Has he ever been on the DL with rotator cuff issues? Phil Niekro threw knucklers well into his 40's, as I recall (anyone know the actual numbers?).

Maybe we should just sign Wakefield to about a 15-year contract now. He might give us a bulk discount special -- you know, 15 years for the price of 12 or something like that, with super-size fries thrown in for good measure.

yeszir

Niekro played until he was 48 I believe. I doubt Wake could do that, no matter what type of pitcher he is. Modern day players just aren't resilient enough to do that.

It seems way to early to jump ahead and predict what the team will be like in 5 years, and i really dont want to worry about that now. But i dont agree with you on the pedro part. I dont think hes gonna stay with the sox for 5 more years. I predict he will be gone this year or pretty soon. Hes also getting pretty old.
