Last September, left-handed reliever Hideki Okajima locked in his $1.75 million option for the 2009 season by reaching an appearances threshold. That salary could have been automatically triggered by either 65 games pitched in 2008 or 115 combined appearances in 2007 and 2008. Though Okajima had 64 appearances last year, he made his 115th career regular season appearance as a Sox last Aug. 15, thereby assuring a third season as a Red Sox.

However, the ramifications of that option reach even further. Okajima, who was a bargain at $1.25 million in both 2007 and 2008, would have become a free-agent following last season had the option a) not become guaranteed and b) been declined by the Sox. But once the option became guaranteed, the Sox assured that Okajima would be under team control for years to come should they wish to keep him.

Unlike some Japanese players who have clauses that make them free agents upon the expiration of their first MLB contract, Okajima will become arbitration eligible while remaining under Red Sox team control when his contract concludes following this season, according to an MLB source. As such, the Sox can retain him through six years of major-league service time.

You don't think it's a great value for the Sox? If he continues to pitch the way he has, the Sox have him for cheap. If he doesn't, he can be let go.

what kind of number would he fetch in arbitration?

I would say maybe 3-4 million if he has another good season. Paps just got 6?

Definitely good news. Oki has been instrumental to our success over the last 2 years.

How this is anything but good news is beyond me. He's a guy who could have tested the market and gone someplace else. If they keep him, great; if they let him go, it will probably be time.

Agreed. He's a great asset to our bullpen, he's been reliable at worst, and we'd have him relatively cheap for another few years--even at our discretion!!

The only way the deal could be better is if Okajima cloned himself and we didn't have to pay his clone...but short of that, this is a great deal.

Yea, it's good news, especially cause the Sox can keep him at reasonable value and still go year-to-year with him

While his 2008 did not measure up to his outstanding 2007, he was still a valuable and reliable member of the bullpen. It is a good move to keep him around.
