The Red Sox have offered Kenshin Kawakami a three-year, $21 million contract, according to Nikkan Sports.

Our Japanese is a little rusty, but the report clearly says 19 billion yen and the Boston Globe's Japanese reporter confirms the rest. This is about what we figured Kawakami would go for. He has a below average fastball, but his command is excellent and he mixes his pitches well. He should be at least a No. 4 starter in the U.S.

A good chance of giving us similar numbers to Derek Lowe for about $40 million less.

You lie.

Depends what you expect from Derek Lowe.

I see a 4.00 - 4.50 ERA pitcher with a move to the AL East.

Thats exactly what A.J. Burnett was last year. 4.08 ERA I believe. I'd take that from my fourth starter any day.

I meant that D-Lowe is a known quantity, and Kawakami isn't, so you can't compare him to Lowe when he hasn't thrown a single pitch stateside.

I wouldn't be that hasty to compare him to Derek Lowe, and I don't expect him to be better than Lowe, but I think this guy could give us good numbers from fifth spot. A 4.25 - 4.60 ERA? Sounds reasonable.

Not if you read his scouting report.

If you're bomb-prone in Japan while playing in a pitcher's park with elite defense behind you, AND have durability issues, then a 4.60 ERA at Fenway might be all too kind.

Little nervous about Kawamaki. I'm not sure you can count on the guy to make it in the American League East.

I think an interesting thing about these older japanese starters is that they may require a few times through the league to be figured out. If a veteran japanese pitcher can come in and throw strikes without giving up lots of walks then the Sox can likely get something servicable out of them. Even good teams can struggle with pitchers they haven't seen before, even if those pitchers aren't very good.

If this report is true it seems that they either don't think that the 5 SP options they have now are going to work, they are fearing injuries, or they are looking to move someone...

Beckett
Dice
Lester
Wake
Buchholz/Bowden/Kawakami...

if they're also interested in names like Smoltz and Lowe then I can't help but wonder what future the Sox see for Wake, Buchholz and Kawakami. Bowden might need a bit more time before being ready, but they seem to have a lot of options there.

I really like the idea of getting Smoltz too, and don't like Lowe so much, but that's a lot of pitching options.

Kawakami...

They need catching, but would they be willing to move Buchholz to get it? I doubt it.

Texas loves Buchholz and may overvalue him in a trade (Nolan Ryan talked about him). I'd still rather not trade him though.

I can see why they love him, he's got very good stuff.

What would overvaluing Buchholz land the Sox? A catcher and something else? I don't know what I would want from the Rangers at this point, and Buchholz's trade value probably isn't as high as it was last year at this time.

Right, and I definitely would rather not deal Buch now, mainly because of the depreciated value.

Sounds like he's worth a flier. If he can do anything at all in the AL East. He will be good trade bait to an NL team.

Exactly. Soft tossing control pitcher who gives up bombs.
